I responded with a thumbs-up, then turned my attention to the two ghosts who looked as ragged as Zoe’s text sounded.

“How’d it go?”

“Well, there was nothing for a long time, but then…” Ripley shot a knowing look at Addy.

“Then Blake and his older brother, Kaden, disappeared into the back office once Zoe left. They talked about her.” Addy swallowed forebodingly.

“They mentioned that she’s been asking around about Paris’s death and that she pushed Blake on his alibi. They’re worried about her. Kaden said he’d have people look into her, and Blake said he might need to take care of her.” Ripley’s expression dropped, like she regretted everything she’d ever said about the young woman.

“Ugh. That’s worse than I thought. There’s no way she can keep looking into this case now.”

“Rejoin forces?” Ripley asked.

“Are you sure you’re okay with Zoe?” I countered.

Ripley’s lips twitched downward. “It’s possible you were right about her being a Jasmine. Clark moving on made me … wonder if I’ll ever be at peace like that. I took it out on you, and I was unfairly critical of Zoe. You were right.”

I swallowed hard. Ripley’s pause during her statement about Clark moving on had glossed over a lot of things she wouldn’t say. She didn’t want me to blame myself for the fact that she was stuck here with me. But that was the reason she hadn’t moved on. It was hard not to feel responsible for her unhappiness when she fell into these depressive states.

“You had your reasons,” I croaked out, glad we were talking, but unsure of how to help her.

“Oh, thank goodness.” Addy’s shoulders slumped forward in relief. “You two were making me so nervous with how mad you were at each other.” Suddenly, her attention caught on the paintings. She raced forward. “Is this me?”

Pride expanded through my chest as I confirmed it was.

“It’s gorgeous, Megs.” If Addy could’ve blushed, she would’ve as she gave us both a sheepish smile. “I mean, I’m not saying I’m gorgeous, but you—”

“You are,” Ripley and I said at the same time.

“Well, if you insist.” Addy swatted in mock shyness at us.

We laughed, and it felt good to be back with my best friend. But as happy as I was about our reconciliation, that didn’t change the fact that Zoe was in danger. Without telling her about my ability to talk to ghosts, I wasn’t sure how I was going to get her to leave this case alone.
